Using Encyclopedia in the Classroom

Encyclopedia Vol 1 A-E is being taught this fall at UC San Diego, Temple University, Brown University, California College of the Arts, St. John’s University, Wheaton College, and Columbia College.

With its unique cross-referencing system, and original visual art, each volume of The Encyclopedia Project is a teaching tool that engenders innovative usage in the classroom, either as an alternative or companion to the traditional short story anthology.

The question “What occurs under the sign of fiction?”, which initiated The Encyclopedia Project’s exploration of fictional forms, is a great way for students of literature and creative writing to enter into a conversation about the terminology, history, uses, figures, categories and possibilities of narrative. In addition, it offers a unique introduction to a full-spectrum community of writers and artists whose ideas connect and diverge with each other—and with literary traditions—in unexpected and engaging ways.
